Is it possible to get electrically operated retracting door mirrors fitted to my Galaxy?  I think someone told me that they are available as an optional extra on theSEAT ALHAMBRA.  My garage door is rather narrow, giving about 2 inches clearance either side.  I really messed up the mirrors on my previous Galaxy so I have always leaned out of the window of this car and manually retracted the mirror and so far have avoided any scratches but rather fancy having them electrically operated.

I dare say it is possible to retro fit the Alhambra or Sharan electric folding mirrors. The correct wiring loom will have to be fitted along with internal switch gear too.

The Alhambra and later spec Sharan mirrors are a straight swap over for the Galaxy ones , but as Paul  says , they will need the correct switch and loom to be wired in as they have the extra motor in them for the folding function .

There was a set on Ebay recently but im not sure what they sold for . New price will be in the region of £100 - £120 per mirror iirc.

There is also an additional control unit required to operate the folding function. It is called the "Exterior Mirror Fold System Control Unit"......who'd have thought it!! Grin

If looking for the bits in a breakers, make sure you get this ECU aswell.

I am going to revel a secret......

I have put my order in for a set of VW sharan mirrors with the indicator and folding function
The company I am getting mine from is based in German.

Folding VW Sharan mirrors

As the text is German I have given a rough translation below, this is a direct translation from the main Germain text in the advert translated by Babel fish.

They offer Seat Alhambra (model 95-06) on a pair outside mirror for its VOLKSWAGEN Sharan (model 95-07), and Ford Galaxy (Mod. 96-07) with integrated side turn signals. It concerns thereby 2 complete mirrors, it is electrically adjustment and heatable. The left mirror glass is aspherically divided, the right convex curved (against the dead angle), which are mirror caps primed. The mirrors are e-examined and do not have to be registered not into the registration papers. Equipped with electrical folding function, the mirrors cost a surcharge of 29. - EUR for each side. If necessary we offer the professional lacquer finish of the mirror caps to 39. - EUR for each side on. Consider please also our other auctions, further revaluing parts for your Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy find you HERE.

As you can see they offer the folding option as an extra plus they can paint them too.

I am just waiting for a reply about the mirror glass as it set up for left hand drive.

Can't wait till I get them then my Ultima will be even more unique  Grin Grin

When I spoke to the seller last week he quoted me 255 euro which is approx £190.
I have gone for the folding option but not the painting as I can do that myself.

I must admit I don't know,
Daz has got me a bit worried now. I am going to contact the seller again and ask him.

It seems to me these mirrors are not made by VW but aftermarket.
Where the advert says Galaxy 1997 to 2007 I wonder if you do need it or not, I hope not

I am not sure about the aftermarket mirrors Dave but, I do know why the VW have an ECU. The mirrors have a contact switch which is used as an recognition for the mirror being folded. When the ECU sees this contact, it removes the voltage from the folding motor to prevent it burning the motor out or continually blowing the fuse. Also, the motors are only fed with voltage via 2 wires. The ECU recognises which way the switch has been positioned (to folded or not) and then reverses the polarity to the motor to run it in the opposite direction.

How the non genuine ones would work, I don't know. Maybe they expect you to realise that you need this ECU. Dunno!

Don't bother ordering the Sharan mirrors from that useless numpty in Germany.

I have sent him 12 e-mails now asking about the power fold option and how to pay etc etc how many replies have I had back NONE

So I ain't getting them from him now and not going to pay either.

Instead I have found a pair of new 2004 Sharan mirrors (with indicators) from a company called A1 mirrors in Yorkshire cost me £141 including VAT and P&P should be here next week sometime.  Smiley

Unfortunately they don't have the power fold option but not to worried about that.  Sad

The only thing I am worried about is what to do with the original side indicators in the wings.  Huh?

There are two options I know of Dave. The Sharan, when it has the indicators in the mirrors, has a blanking plate with the word 'Sharan' in place of the repeater lamp. You could use these and paint them Dunno!

Or, I am fairly certain the C-Max uses the same repeaters. When these have the indicators in the mirrors (recent models), they too have blanking plates with 'Ghia' on them. I know yours is an Ultima but, may not look too out of place.

Failing that, leave your old ones as they are!

I have Just had a belated birthday pressie  Woohoo

Back in January I ordered the 2004 Sharan mirrors with indicator and folding option for £190
BUT despite sending several e-mails requesting info he never replied so I gave up hence my post above.

Well I just recieved an e-mail from e-bay saying I have a message from the seller (nothing like being 8 weeks late) so I read it and it's dam good news I think

He's apologised for the delay ( Huh?) in replying  he has the mirrors in stock ready and waiting and if I still want them (stupid question) I can have the pair brand new with powerfold for £145 which is a £60 saving so I have now paid for them and await the posty.

Blimey nearly 3 weeks after paying for the mirrors I get an e-mail from UPS

Dear Mr Madden

GURU AUTOMOTIVE
   (suppliers of the mirrors)
Have shipped your package with us etc etc etc

ESTIMATED DELIVERY DATE 18th April

Thank you   UPS

So after nearly 4 months of first placing the order I should get my mirrors at the weekend (I won't hold my breath) finally  Woohoo

On a different note
Yesterday I got a message from tele guru responding to my request for info on how the powerfold works and his reply was lets just say short and to the point

You need switch for this    Huh?

That was his reply all five words of it so my job this weekend is puzzle solving how to wire the things o what fun I am going to be having  Grin

When I started this thread going at the end of Jan it was because I fancied them to help me get through the rather tight garage door.

However in the ensuing period I have got quite good at opening the up and over door from about 50 yards away and have the window down, offside mirror folded back, window up by the time I get to the garage so I can then go straight in.  I reverse out just using the nearside mirror and get out no bother.  When I'm out I stop and open out the offside mirror and off I go.

I shall still follow DaV6's progress with bated breath and hope that it all works out for him I don't think that I could cope with all that hassle especially as I have now got the retracting down to a such fine art.   Scratch Chin
