No new pics yet

But I am now more than happy with my bargin.
Having paid £330 for her when the guy was expecting at least a grand that was a result
Getting her home and finding the engine does work was even sweeter
But know after jacking her up today I found almost new tyres on each corner.
Even better result

Now I can see what he wanted a £1000 for her, o'well his loss my gain  :lmao:

Right now I am off work for 2 weeks it time to get cracking with the ultima, with only 8 days till I go to Scotland for some R & R and  12 days till the BB it time to step up a gear.

Heres some more pics of what I have done so far.

[attachthumb=#]                          [attachthumb=#]
Now I have 3 peddles.                    Connecting the clutch master cylinder hose.

[attachthumb=#]                          [attachthumb=#]
Hose connected as well as the        Gear lever removed.
Clutch feed pipe.

[attachthumb=#]                          [attachthumb=#]
Up in the air ready for action.          Engine Out (it's now dark !!)

[attachthumb=#]                          [attachthumb=#]
Engine now in the Ultima                 Manual Gear lever in place awaiting connection.

The hardest part is now done, removing both the engines and replacing the rebuilt one from the old one in the Ultima.
The peddle were not to bad to do. They are mounted on a long bar through the peddle box with return springs. The bar is shorter on the auto as there is no clutch peddle.

All I had to do was remove the brake peddle from the auto and push out the short bar and then remove the clutch peddle complete with the clutch master cylinder and brake peddle from the manual push out the long bar and refit it in to the ultima reattach the peddles and bingo 2 hours later the ultima has 3 peddles.

All I have to do now is sort out the electric which should be easy with the excellent advice Daz has given me.

Stick  it all back together again then sort out the interior.

Will it make the BB.... yes I hope so if I have no major problems

By the way Daz I am getting like you, I am getting the knack of undoing the suspension mount top nuts. The ones on the Ultima were a doddle and posed no problems they were both off in 15 mins.

Are there many Ultimas left, I remember seeing 2 or 3 when I first bought mine but must confess, even though I drive 40,000+ miles per year all around the country, I haven't seen another for years. Ford only built a small batch and couldn't sell them at the time, so does anyone know how many were built, how many are likely to be left and how much is a 36,000 miler worth now? Is it one of a kind now.

I'm currently in talks with Ford and AutoEuropa to try and obtain production/sales figure breakdowns so will hopefully be able to answer this soon!

 :woohoo:   :woohoo:   :woohoo:

YIPPPEEEEE

The Ultima is now running with a sweet sounding engine purring away.

Thanks to Daz and his brilliance I managed to bypass the automatic starting restricions so now she is just like a manual.

BUT as they say every bit of good news has to have some bad news

Yep I have a problem with the clutch and or gears as it seems there is no drive going through to the driveshafts and it is possible to select a gear withoput using the clutch peddle.

I have posted a topic about this  HERE (http://www.fgoc.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3672.0.html) in MK 1 Technical help to keep it seperate.

Read the other post and it does sound like a external linkage
gear lever/clutch peddle to me (No expert mind  :P )
Due to the fact the problem did not exist before

It will happen dude.....stick at it and cant wait to meet you and the ULTIMA special
at Gaydon....This time next week  :-\ .....

YYYYYIIIIIIIIPPPPPEEEEEE

 :yahoo:  :woohoo:   :yahoo:

Thanks to the legendary Daz I know have power at the wheels and can select all the gears normally.

It's all systems go no to put it all back together again by monday for it's MOT the the trip upto Scotland.

The problem was the inner driveshaft whichs goes into the box the splines at the end has somehow stripped and whould not engage into the drive gear inside the box.

The soloution was to obtain a second hand drive shaft and fit it instead.

It would make a change from greasy finger prints  ;D

Well it's 22.25 and I have just come in from working on the car I am cold, wet, freezing and hungry but it worth it as the Ultima is now on the ground sitting pretty on her lowered springs.

It's to dark to take pics so they will be here tomorrow.

All is left to do now is put the inside back together again which will be easy compared to the mechanical side of the conversion.
Then give her a bath then take it to the MOT on Monday

Well done Dave for overcoming this minor hiccup! ;)  I couldn't let you pull out of the FGOC BB after all the hard work you've put in to your Ultima to get it ready.

It is usually something simple but, I know, at times like that, your mind runs riot with you thinking the worst.

 :'( :'( :'(

I am really sorry Guys but dispite my best efforts the Ultima will not be able to attend the birthday bash.

I tried and failed and feel gutted and dissapointed  and in a way I feel I have let you down because of all the encouragement and advice given.

Since last Friday I have worked no stop from 8ish in the mroning till at least 10ish at night working in freezing wet cold conditions at times in the hope of getting the Gal ready in time but alas I failed, so near yet so far

It's all the awkward and pain in the a**s bit that have taken time all the mechanical bits are now done it's just the interior left to do.

I am now tired and exhausted and have 'thrown the towel in' and admit defeat (for now!!)

However me and the misses will still be at the BB we will just be coming in Monty the mondeo instead.

I am now off to drown my sorrows in a nice bottle of southern comfort (but not to much) then get ready for our trip to Scotland tomorrow for some RR and help Tom.

Once again sorry Guys.

Dave, I am really sorry the Ultima will not be at BB but, I am amazed at what you have achieved in such a short time.

Do not feel you have let anyone down. If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right.......don't rush it. There will be many more events for you to attend this year.

It will still be great to meet you and your missus at BB. ;)

Post by: DaV6 on February 24, 2008, 07:01:16 PM
Right after a short time away from the Ultima it was back to work with it yesterday. As most of you know all there is left to do is the inside.

Well after putting most it back before the BB me and the misses have had a rethink and have now restripped the interior.

Why..... well all will be revealed over the next few days.

The carpet at the rear has been bugging us and despite trying to remove some of the stains we have been thinking about replacing the carpert and have had an idea for a while which we were not sure would work or not and after many hours of discussing it we decided to go ahead with the idea which we think is unique and in our opinion looks quite good.

This is the old dirty carpet,
[attachthumb=#]

Which after a quick clean soon dissappeared under (yes under !!) this our new floor...

[attachthumb=#]                   [attachthumb=#]
View from rear.                      View from front.

I did say it was unique.
We left the old carpet in place for insulation and sound proofing and  used 'no glue' toughloc laminate flooring from B & Q on top.

Fitting it was reasonable easy, all the trim panels had to come out first the hardest part was cutting out the holes for the seat mounting points and making sure the all lined up. The rear trim panels had to be trimmed by 8mm as the floor is slightly thicker.

Also today I have had to run the wiring through from the rear O/S cubby hole for this...

[attachthumb=#]                                   [attachthumb=#]
TV head unit + Freeview.                         Freeview.

I am going to be putting an in dash 7" TV monitor with DVD player (thanks James for the advice  ;) ) up front in the cubby hole under the head unit and a digital freeview tuner in the rear cubby hole.

I have run a wire from the front along the O/S sills into the cubby hole to power the freeview box when the TV monitor is turned on also running along the sill is a 5mt 3 plug phono to phono lead for the signals

The final fitting of the units will be tomorrow or Tuesday

I have also fitted this a sabre tooth aerial on the roof (following Steve's excellent 'how to') for the radio
[attachthumb=#]

And the final job today was fitting these...
[attachthumb=#]              [attachthumb=#]

Blue LED lights on the rear door step trims these work with the entry illumination lights so when you unlock the doors they turn on and off when locking.

Tomorrow will be refitting the dash.

Blimey Dave,

You dont do things by halve!!! There was me thinking we would have the only manual geared

"concept" look to it!!!!!! Can't wait to see it finished........

The blue lights are LEDs and got them from Halfords. (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_183743_langId_-1_categoryId_52756)

Thats the idea Simon, no more messy carpets. Feel free to pinch any ideas just don't hurt them  :lmao:

The lights are quite posey Dave and do look kinda ok , but as far as the plywood floor goes.... I think Id rather have the stained carpet ;)

It certainly is a one off now , thats for sure  :biglol:

Just when I thought I had nearly finished the Ultima I have given myself some more work to do.

I have just taken delivery of these today   :woohoo:

[attachthumb=#]

I brought them from another member Sean last week for £175  (cheers mate) which I think is a good price as they are genuine Ford.

I was going to get Angel eyes but they are nearly double this price.
Instead I am going to wait and see if and when Gary converts his morette to angel eyes and if he does and they look good I might follow.

So tomorrow I'll finish of the dash area then try and fit the lights

Right peeps here's the next instalment

The Ultima is now 99% complete. It's been a long journey tough and hard at times but it has been worth it. Also thanks to you lot for all the advice, help and encouragement.

The new 'entertainment' system is now installed

Under the drivers seat is JBL amp to power the sub in the rear (not fitted yet).

Mate that is just "Total Bling" dude.............
Has the Galaxy world lost a rare Ultima ? ?   Yeah!
Has the Galaxy world gained a rarer piece of art ? ? Most definate !
I had thoughts in my head about how good it would look (and i thought it would look nice)
and i have been wasting my brain space as that my son is Bloody Lovely!
If it looks as good in the flesh as it does in the pics, (which i am sure it does).
It is gonna turn heads.........

Top work mate and it is a nice credit to the FGOC that you did it here  :-*

Cheers Guys.

Paul
The head rest springs are made by Folia Tec THIS (http://www.lkperformancestyling.co.uk/catalogue/foliatecheadrestsprings.html) is what they are but I got mine from Halfords at £14.99 a pair. (Paul why are pound symbols keep being displayd as a question mark !!!)

They are powered by little watch type batteries and there is a little on/off switch so you can have them on only when you want too.

Daz
Defo chuffed thanks. I agree I will have to watch those headrest springs because James likes them too

Steve...
Defo perminate grin now and yep more in the pipeline

Gary....
I agree they are never finished just yet anyway I have one mod which is currently under 'review' it's looking possible but money might be an issue and that's a Golf VR6 turbo conversion so as they say watch this space as it may happen you never know

Hi Mate

Thanks for the link but it is the wrong engine

I do need the VR6 engine but it has to be one specifically from a Golf/Corrado VR6 turbo these are as rare as rocking horse p**  but are out there somewhere.  ;D

DISASTER STRIKES

Well not a major one thank god (I spoke too soon Darren !!)

Since getting the Ultima on the road last weekend I have travelled 1000 miles in her on various road and distances to give her a good shake down and though test.

Well everything went well until 4 hours ago.
Driving along the A23 coming back from wet windy Brighton my misses said to me
"Can you smell petrol"
"No" I replied
"Well I can" she said
10 minutes later I too could smell petrol then splut splut splut stop
 Managed to get it the side of the road did a bit of investigating getting gassed at the same time by petrol fumes and the problem....

The PETROL PROOF fuel line joiner which I brought from my local motor factors which stated on the packet For use with high pressure fuel injection systems on modern day cars had MELTED  ???  >:(

So 3 hours later after a trip on the back of an AA truck I am home and tomorrow I shall be going to my local factors for an explanation and refund and try and get a fuel hose for free as compensation  ;D

But apart from that problem I am happy to report the Ultima is brilliant runs like a dream and has no 'other' problems

The MPG she's returning is
Motorway 31MPG
A Road     28-30 MPG
B Road     26 MPG
Around town AVG 20-24 MPG

Here's a tip try Wynn's Injector power 3 which cleans the fuel system and enhances combustion brilliant stuff which I recommend

Sorry m8, didn't mean to jinx you!! :ooooops:

I would say, just think of the fuel you saved on the back of the AA truck but, you probably lost more on the A23.

I am sure you'll have her sorted in no time!
