One review (on an alpha forum) said they're OK but sometimes noisy. I can't see how but made me wary.

Central door locking/opening issue is usually wiring loom issue to door.In your case possibly the drivers door.Pull the rubber back and check wiring. No need to remove door card at this stage

7 hours labour does sound quite a bit but at £300 it's a good rate.
When I had my last timing belt and water pump done last year the bill was roughly £350, but their labour rate is about £70 an hour.
The parts prices don't look too bad to be honest, I think it just looks a big bill as you had all the work done in one hit.

Cheers Bud will do.. C/l is just drivers door.. locks on key, but not on remote, but UN locks on remote! Fuel cap lock goes in & out about 3 times, but stays unlocked.. might take door cover off when i get back from hols (need to do drivers side rear to get speaker working)... i have multi meter/haynes manual(not much use)... any better wiring diagrams anywhere?
Will feel epic if  I sort it! Smiley
Regards

If you have a laptop buying Vagcom/vcds lite lead off Ebay might be wise as you can use it to test and diagnose sensors. If however one set fails the whole system goes down so as you say listen for clicks and check wiring under bumpers
As for Central locking is it one door not working or the whole system? if it is the whole system try reprogramming the key fob,If it is just one door check the wiring loom to it for breaks in the rubber bits between body and door  Wink
