I have a caravan - and yes I know we have a bad name, I don't think I get too many traffic jams behind me - honest!
I have not yet towed using the Galaxy. On my previous car, being a non MPV, I obviously had to have towing mirrors. With the height and width of the Galaxy, I'm not sure if they are necessary? I have been told they are not, but I would like to be sure.

I would recomend them, even though the Gal is quite wide you get that little bit more visibility behind.

I use mine to tow, its not the diesel but it is a really good tug boat. have to keep restraining myself whilst towing even up hill. MPG drops a bit but it is still better than the 4X4s ive towed with in the past.

As taken from HERE:

The law relating to mirrors when towing a caravan states that they must provide an adequate view to the rear and along both sides of the caravan, making them a legal requirement if your caravan is wider than your car. Door mirrors on cars and 4 x 4 's are type approved to give you a prescribed view of behind the car when not obstructed by a caravan or trailer.

If the caravan obstructs the rear view mirror, additional exterior mirrors should be fitted. However, the additional mirrors should not project more than 200mm (250mm for all new cars sold after 26th of January 2007)beyond the widest part of the towing vehicle or caravan.

Towing mirrors must also be removed when travelling solo.

Since the 12th of December 2005 it is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom and the EU that mirrors comply with community directive 2003/97 or 2005/27 or ECE regulation 46.02.

lol...your own words paul? lmao.

there is some law about these things...but i find the galaxy mirrors alone to be "ok" IIRC our caravan is 7foot and 2 inches wide.

however, i do use the towing mirrors - they do help, just make sure there good quality ones, and fitted firmly - else they vibrate and you cant see jack all!

*steps back, and gasps*

how much will ford charge for them?

i got mine from a local caravan shop - it seems to me, the ones with the good old rubber straps are the best - the other sort seem to vibrate more (i bought more than one pair to test, then took the crap ones back (they let me do that))

believe it or not - the caravan club did a test on wing mirrors - to find the "best"

I got a pair of cheapies from my local caravan place when I bought my mobile road block.  They fit to the mirrors using 2 rubber straps.

Whilst they do vibrate a little, this has never been a problem.

Whereas the Galaxy mirrors do enable me to see down the side of my van, the extended mirrors allow me to see vehicles behind me.

Thanks Matt and Grumpy - The reason I feel I should go for the real McCoy is due to a bad experience. On my last car - a Vauxhall Vectra, I initially purchased some non Vauxhall mirrors - they always vibrated, until one day in Dorset, one vibrated off and before I could do anything there was a crunch from under my wheel!!!!! - The Vauxhall ones I then got fitted like a glove. I'll try Matt's advice and see if my local shop will allow me to try first.

If I remember correctly, the Vectra had really odd shaped mirrors which made strapping on towing mirrors a problem.  The Galaxy mirrors are fine with strap-ons, mine have never let me down.

So, now I am a member of the "rolling road block club" (as TDi90 put it Grin), are there any recommendations for a decent set of towing mirrors for the Galaxy?

I bought some strap on ones from Halfords and have to say they are cr*p! Vibrated to the point I could see virtually nothing and one of them had a mind of it's own. I set the position, then watched it adjust itself to the point that I could see myself driving!! Shocked

I like the look of these on eBay, but @ £50, they need to be right! Anyone used these?

I tried a set of those, but didnt buy them.  Nowt wrong with em, its just that the sucker pads block the vision on door mirrors and I like to see clearly in both Grin

The ones I use, are the older versions of these and they are good.

Have you tried popping into ya local motoring shop and asking if you can try some for size and fit? Wink

Grumpy,

The Vectra 95 to 2001 did have odd shaped mirror cases and the VX mirrors are VERY well made alloy frame fits over the mirror but the price OUCH £125 when I bought them from Main dealers.. If the Gal can do with strap Ons thats the way to go for the sake of yer poor wallet  Grin
