Frank may be being replaced with a mk2 2.3i zetec shortly after xmas Wink The mysterious rattling noise coming from the engine still hasnt been traced so we are gonna get cash back and stump up for a petrol Gal.  No diesel mk2's in our price range and I aint having a mk 1 again! Cheesy
Our only concern is that we tow a caravan, and wanted to know if anyone on here tows with the 2.3i and what its like pulling (our current van is only a little over a ton).

MK2 2.3i engines were tweeked over the MK1s so they have more horses and more torques. You may find yourself working through the gears more than with a diesel due to the lower torque, but the 2.3 is a perfectly capable tow car Wink

The dealer is gonna get a 2.3 in for us to test for a couple of weeks, so I have asked him to try and find one with a tow bar Wink

Hope that goes well for you m8!! Keep us posted  Wink the 2.3 is a good choice as  I know a few people who have towed caravans, but they were mk1's Im sure the mk2 is better.  Wink

Hi Mate, as a caravanner myself, can I suggest that you join the "caravan talk" website and post this question on the "towcar" section. I've had loads of help from this website, and it is the reason I bought a Galaxy when I changed my towcar earlier this year.

Hi..

I can't speak for a 2.3 petrol.. But my mk2 bammer 130TDi towed our very full trailer tent without any issues for the last 2 summers (and hopefully it'll tow our folding camper if/when i buy one!) cruised along really nicely at a steady 60 even when going up hill and ate up the twisty roads of North Wales without even bating an eyelid..  Have to say if I ever needed an excuse to buy a bammer/gal then that is it purely.

Slightly off topic this one, but would the towers/caravaners among us like their own section on the forum to discuss any towing/caravanning issues/tips/tricks? Might be worth setting one up if you think it will be used?

Let me know

Paul, we seem to have had a few posts about towing and towbars recently, might be useful to have a towing section. Anybody else interested?

I have read that the 2.3 is a very thirsty car when towing. I used to tow with a Pajero, great towcar but the reason I changed to a Galaxy was because of the awful MPG, (17-18MPG towing). I looked at a 2.3 but was warned that the fuel consumption was as bad as the Pajero. I was advised to try a diesel Galaxy, result, 33-35mpg towing.

Christ I nearly had a coronary when I saw 16mpg while towing!!!!..  Having towed with a very full car (including the kitchen sink I swear!) and a full trigano oceane trailer tent to both whitby & snowdon I consistently got around the 35-40mpg mark even with the use of cruise control locked to 60... Running joke when we first towed with the bammer was "are you sure the trailers still there???"

Rob - Contemplating the Penine Pathfinder folding trailer...  Trigano Oceane may be up for offers!!!

With a gross train weight of a little under 3500kg (in accordance with me licence Wink Grin)  Frank will do roughly do between 30 - 40 mpg towing, depending on wind and roads.

He's here to stay now as we are having to whack a new clutch on.  We were looking at a Nissan Terrano 2 2.7TDi but that was roughly 16 -17 towing as well Shocked.

I have beem using a 1600cc vectra to tow my caravan which is a 2 berth and quite light although any hill meant 2nd gear
I am looking forward to using the Gall to tow. As well as a bigger engine (2.3 petrol) she looks better

Aye!

2.3 is cool for towing, don't even know the caravan is there, (unless you look in the various mirrors!). does zap the juice a bit, 20+ mpg if you take your time and don't clout it when you climbing a hill. will sit comfy and straight all day long, dual carriageway. motorway or country lanes, don't forget the 50 MPH speed limit for country roads, i didn't know about until recently, have been lucky not to clock some points!
definitely doesn't get bossed about by the caravan like some cars i have driven, seen!

I would like to state for the record that mine IS a MK1, and the MK2 can oinly be an improvement!

The Policeman pulled over a car and strolled up to the drivers window: "Excuse me sir, but do you know that you're driving without a rear light?"

The driver jumped out and ran to the rear of his car and let out a whimpering groan. The driver seemed so genuinely distressed that the policeman took a sympathetic view: "Don't take it so hard, it's not all that serious an offence..."

"Isn't it?" the driver cried, "Where's my caravan gone!"
