Camping with the Gal on holiday 2009

« Reply #16 on: April 18, 2008, 06:18:01 AM »

The mk3 does, as you'd expect, totally outperform the mk1 / 2 models. My mk2 is loaded with airbags but in a massive impact with a solid object would crumple quite a lot....not good. The thing to remember with these NCAP tests is that the cars are rammed into solid, stationary objects etc. On the road if I hit another car, 9 times out of 10 my big heavy Gal will come out better than other cars that are a lot lighter & smaller and may well have great, modern safety equipment with 5 star ratings. I'm not panicking that my mk2 is a "death trap" or something. Would love the mk3 though....maybe in 3-4 years, dream on!

HI Malkyp and everyone!  I know this is a long time ago. I'm like you thinking of upgrading to a  mk3 for safety reasons now, but need a lot of space as I use the Mk2 for gigging work, often with long flight cases lenghwise on one side and 2 seats in line on the other side. Is this practical on the mark 3, how much space is lost? How did you get on with the mk3 was there enought room for your needs.

Also I wonder do mk2 wheels fit onto mk3. From a 1.9 tdi zetec. I would like 2 sets of wheels if possible, for winter use..

Mk2 wheels don’t fit on the Mk3 as Mk2 are VW fitment and Mk3 are Ford.

excellent! thanks very much. just one more question re the safety is there any significant difference between the various mk3 models in terms of safety. eg the 1.8 and the 2.0 ghia. Obviously some may have more airbages, but in terms of the structural issues highlighted in this post?
