Been looking at some window tinting and been quoted £235 for to have the 5 rear windows tinted to whatever i like from medium tint to privacy tint.

Is that a decent price?

Windscreen must let 75% of visible light through and all other glass surfaces forward of the B Pillar must let more than 70% of visible light through or it's illegal.  It's not illegal to apply tint to these windows, but, due to the original glass already having a slight tint and non tinted glass only letting in around 85% of visible light anyway, chances are any extra tint applied will reduce incoming visible light to below legal limits.

I;'m a member of a local Cruise site (my mate runs it so i join int he chat every now and again) they have a CLO (cruise liasion officer) from the local Police force who comes on and answers questions - when asked about window tinting he said this -

"The Road Vehicles Construction and Use Regulations 1986 specify the minimum amount of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows, these are

Motor Vehicles first used before 1/4/1985
Windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

MV first used on or after 1/4/1985
Windscreen 75%
Front side windows 70%.

Where people make the mistake is that they fail to allow for the tint that is already normally on a vehicle at manufacture, ie most cars today that have factory tint fall into near enough the maximum permissable transparency.
If a person adds a 20% tint then the combined effect would take it over the limit.

The underlying issue is road safety and the view available to the road by the driver.

A reputable company should advise correctly and be able to measure the total transparency.

If the tinting was severe then you could find youre vehicle being issued with a Prohibition Notice and the possibilty of being reported to the courts."

Still looking at this, quotes seem to mostly be around the £250 mark with £200+VAt being the cheapest i can get at the moment and £445 + VAT being the highest (all for a tint from B Pillar back)

Hi All,Just had my gal tinted,it cost £250 and well worth the money. It makes a stunning change to the vehicle.I had b piller backwards in dark tint and the driver/passenger/2 x 1/4 windows done in light smoke.Well pleased with the job.It took them 6 hours to complete.I tried window tinters all over the country, some where cheeper, but taking into account traveling/fuel,and having to hang around somewhere i didn't know, and some where out in the sticks,i thing i had a good deal.Cheers BoB

Hi all had contact with Richard at www.tintr.co.uk about club discount and here is a copy of email sent to me if you wish to make use of the discount please quote fgoc when first making contact....

The price quoted is for limo tint from rear doors back to and including rear screen

they have all tints available and can advise on legality of your needs

Hi Dave,
We are more than happy to offer club members a discount. Regular price for a Galaxy rear is £175 but we could do members for £150.
kind regards,
Richard.

Car is going in to tintr in April for windows to be done... ready for fitp. Any members want to join me and take in the sights of Nottingham and maybe get a bit more discount for a block booking. If interested let me know and i will speak to Richard and see what we can sort out.. I was thinking of end of april.

Just for info I'm having the front 1/4 windows and front door windows done in the same as factory tint and the back doors - back done in limo tint... totally blacked out...should look good and the price is £225

I am looking into tinting Carlos Si for him,
Whilst surfing several sites it would appear that they are over-priced and
over-rated! The tint is very easy to cut and apparently some of the pre cuts
acually shrink and fade!!!
The tint from the USA seems to be the most rated stuff and is not really to pricey!
Just depends if you wanna take the plunge Roll Eyes

Hi all is it legal to have the front door windows done to match the back ones  Huh?

Your front side windows must let 75% of the light through to be legal. Considering there may already be a factory tint on the glass already, there is not much scope for more tint. You certainly can't tint them to the same degree as the standard privacy glass on the rears.

At present, front window tints will not fail an MOT but, they are still illegal. The Police (filth in AWTY language Grin) can take your car off the road if you do not remove them at the side of the road when pulled over and VOSA can also. MOT test stations can only advise that they are illegal!! Roll Eyes
