Does this gearbox need a secondary oil cooler, ie Kenlowe type, when used for towing? My previous car a Focus C-Max didn't, but I "boiled" the oil in a Granada once.Very expensive mistake.

I haven't heard of them having one, Alhambraboyo. There are a few automatics used for towing on here, all of which (from what i gather) tow very well without any issues.

Hi Alhambraboyo
I have a 2001 Mk 2 1.9 Tdi, and tow a caravan weighing 1200 Kg. Have had no problems at all.
The handbook gives no advice about extra cooling when towing, and I assume it is not necessary unless you tackle mountain passes in hot countries.
The fact that there is a 'lock-up' on the torque converter in third and fourth gears should stop the oil getting as hot as the old style gearboxes, I reckon, but I am not an expert on this.

Thanks very much for the replies,it appears to be as I thought, it is the same as my C-Max was, newer "electronic" gearboxes are obviously a lot better than the old style.Next post I will try to get in the right section!!

I tow approx 1200kg with my 1.9tdi 2001 auto.  I did have to have the box fixed end of 2006 at around 70,000 miles but this it seems is a reasonably common failure for the diesel auto of this vintage.  I cant say if the towing was to blame or not but I still tow with it.

My car has no additional cooling, I did read somewhere that it wasnt required
