Hi
I am about to tow my caravan for the first time with my 2001 1.9tdi.
Cannot find the recommended maximum weight on the towball in any of the literature in either the handbook or the Haynes manual for the Mark 1.
90 Kg OK?
Clive.

Hi Clive and  Welcome to FGOC

It all depends on the make and type of towbar you have fitted.

I have a Bosal Detachable and it's noseweight is 100kg.

On your towbar, there should be a plate, a bit like a chassis plate. The noseweight should be on there.

If you check Towequipe's Website, you will find useful info about different makes of towbar.

Is your towbar genuine or non-genuine? You usually find genuine towbars are made by a towbar manufacturer anyway.

Clive,

Some towbars are less than the Bosal one quoted above. Witter ones for Mk1/Mk2 are 85kg (only 80kg for the new Galaxy). Therefore, it is vital to check the type approval label on the bar. It may be labelled as the S value.

A 'rule of thumb' for noseweight is 7% of the gross weight of the trailer/caravan. However, this may not be achievable with a heavy 'van and a 'normal' towbar and you would have to reduce it to match the towbar. Obviously, if 7% exceeds the S value significantly, it would indicate that you should consider changing the towbar or buying a smaller caravan.

I found my Mk1 (2.3 petrol) to be an excellent towcar and my new 2007 car (2.0 TDCi) to be even better, though I only tow a folding camper of about 850kg fully laden. I used to try to get the noseweight down to 60 (after measuring it at over 90 on one occasion!) but have settled for 70/75 in the last year or two. At all weights, the car tows in a very stable manner at speeds which are legal in France but not the UK. Who needs a gas guzzler?

Hi All
Thanks for the information. The towbar is a Bosal fitted by a towbar specialist. The S value on the plate is 150 Kg, but assume the front wheels of my Gal would leave the floor on bumps at that. Have towed at 90Kg which is 7% of caravan weight, and everything went well, this is the best towcar I have had, the previous ones with the same van were a Rover 820Si, and a Hyundai Sonata 3 litre, both petrol autos.
Tackled some fair gradients in the Yorkshire Dales, the steepest being a short 1 in 4, but no problems at all.
Thanks again.
Clive.
